Chronically Offline

I Broke Up With Streaming and Got an MP3 Player ⭐️

Hey everyone! I wanted to discuss the differences between using a music streaming app that provides you with access to millions of songs but may push AI-generated music through its algorithm versus using a device where you can add your own favorite music and listen to whatever you want. Especially as someone who is trying to live offline lol.

Back in high school, I used to have my Spotify subscription when it was like $4 USD. But I also used to have my MP3 players as well. But I very much preferred Spotify because, well, I had access to numerous songs right at my fingertips. And I don't have to transfer any FLAC, MP3, and WAV files from my PC to my device, which saves a lot of time and effort.

I was thrilled with my Spotify subscription for years, until AI came in the mix. At first, I was like, “Okay, it's whatever.” That was until I started learning about how AI-generated music could affect smaller, independent artists. Moreover, I didn't like the idea of an algorithm potentially feeding me AI-generated songs that I never asked to hear. Occasionally, I can't even immediately tell whether a song was made using AI. So, I decided to cancel my Spotify account. And honestly, it was one of the best decisions I ever made, lmaoooo.

So, you might be wondering, well, how can I listen to my favorite songs and support the artist? Easy, you can purchase digital music through stores that sell downloadable tracks, buy directly from artists whenever they offer downloads, or purchase CDs and rip your music where permitted. No algorithms, no AI, no subscriptions. All you need is a computer or laptop, a USB-to-USB-C adapter depending on your MP3 player, and, of course, your music. If you don't have a PC, you may also be able to use an adapter that supports both your phone and MP3 player and transfer compatible files directly from your phone. And one of the best parts? You can customize your MP3 player however you want. :)

There are so many helpful guides on YouTube, Reddit, and other platforms that can help you get the most out of your MP3 player. You can even install alternative firmware like Rockbox on compatible devices. I have used Rockbox on my Innoasis Y1 for a minute now, and I love it. The only issue that I have is getting some themes working since the MP3 player uses 360p instead of 240p like the iPod Classic. If you're interested in the Innioasis players, I'd definitely compare the different models before buying. Personally, if you're nervous about opening up your device to upgrade the storage, I'd look at a model that gives you easier access to the SD card, like the Innioasis Y2.

You can also get a modded iPod Classic from https://player-mods.com/ if you don't mind spending a little more. If you're on a budget, there are plenty of inexpensive MP3 players out there, including used ones. You can find inexpensive CD players, and CDs themselves are everywhere: libraries, thrift stores, used record shops, online marketplaces, and regular retail stores. That's actually what I did for a while until I saved enough money to get an MP3 player. :)

Now pros and cons of streaming vs. owning your music 🌺️

🎧 Music Streaming

Pros: Access to millions of songs instantly No need to manually transfer music files Easy to discover new artists and songs Convenient across multiple devices Doesn't require much local storage

Cons: Requires an ongoing subscription for the full experience You don't actually own the music Songs or albums can disappear from the platform Recommendations are controlled by algorithms AI-generated music may appear in recommendations Offline listening can depend on keeping your subscription

💿 MP3 Players / Local Music

Pros: Your music library is completely under your control No subscription is required to listen to files you own Works completely offline No recommendation algorithm You can organize your library however you want Lots of customization possibilities Your collection won't disappear because a streaming license changed

Cons: You have to obtain and transfer your music manually Building a music library can take time Purchasing individual albums and songs can cost more Storage space can be limited by your device Metadata and album art sometimes require manual fixing

Yes, streaming is convenient. But I've realized that I, personally, enjoy having control over my music library more. I choose what gets added. I decide what plays next. And the best part is that my music collection is not determined by an algorithm.

For me, moving backwards from modern technology is a way to move forward sometimes. Take care, everyone! 🩷️
